Camp Longhorn’s Pit Stop (what we lovingly call our health center) is open 24 hours a day with a staff of highly qualified personnel headed by our physicians, nurse practitioners/physician assistants (also known as advanced practice providers or APPs), paramedics/EMTs and nurses. Routine medical care by our Pit Stop staff is covered by camper tuition.
- Camp physicians/APPs are on site and make rounds to see patients at least once daily during the entirety of the camp term and are available in between for emergencies
- We diagnose and treat simple illnesses and injuries, including minor procedures such as laceration repair, foreign body removal, wound care, and splint placement
- We have access to CLIA-waived lab diagnostics such as urinalysis and rapid strep tests
- Over-the-counter and prescription medications are kept on site so that necessary treatments can be initiated as soon as possible
- All medications are securely stored and distributed to campers and counselors
- We utilize evidence-based guidelines and standing orders to treat our campers and staff
- Overnight care in the Pit Stop is available for campers and staff who require additional monitoring
- We have a robust list of out-of-camp referral resources for coordinating necessary medical and/or dental visits and provide transportation to those visits
- For more urgent/emergent needs, referrals and transports are made to Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin, Ascension Seton Hospital in Burnet, Ascension Seton Williamson County, or other facilities as appropriate
